Coup Fatal
June 22, 2014

Karlin Music Theatre

Coup Fatal draws inspiration from big gestures of young hot-blooded men, local dandies who are an inherent part of Kinshasa’s specific atmosphere. Centre stage of this crossover piece is richness, colourfulness and eruptivity brought about by sharing pure beauty in the form of a mix of baroque arias, traditional Congolese music, rock and jazz. In front of your eyes the countertenor Serge Kakudji and thirteen musicians from Kinshasa, each of them from a different musical background, will perform a whole repertory of baroque composers. This unusual connection, an essence of European history and African present, gives birth to a whole new world.

Brussels-based composer Fabrizio Cassol and guitarist Rodriguez Vangama on the one hand and director Alain Platel with dancer Romain Guion (C(H)ŒURS among other things) on the other. Together they had been searching for a scenic form that would encompass the immense potential of the two cultures, as different as they are. In the end, they seem to have decided to celebrate the undeniable and irresistible elegance of the Congolese than to worship baroque repertory.

Coup Fatal will open the Vienna festival Festwochen on the June 10, 2014. After the Austrian metropolis and Amsterdam, Prague is only the third in a row of cities to present the extraordinary piece.
