bout the Musical

I've always felt that if Tragedy is what reflects the human condition, Comedy is what humans invented to cope with it. At best, our stint on this sphere is a matter of laugh and death. As a prime example of this theory, Curtains, a musical that makes merry with murder, suffered more than one tragic loss along its serpenting path to Broadway.

This succinct — and somewhat typical, for him — description of this unique mysical mystery comes from one of its authors, Rupert Holmes.

The musical Curtains is essentially a show within a show. Fading Hollywood starlet and egregiously untalented leading lady Jessica Crenshaw dies under mysterious circumstances during the opening night curtain call of Robbin' Hood of the Old West. It's up to Lt. Frank Cioffi of the Boston Police Department — who dabbles in musical theatre himself — to solve the case, save the show and get the girl before the curtain rises without getting offed himself.

Curtains represents a milestone in the history of musical theatre. It's the first time that a show has combined music, dance, comedy and mystery with a cabaret performance in the style of Chicago or New York, New York. But it's hardly a surprise when the it's the work of John Kander and Fred Ebb.

Curtains had its world premiere on July 25, 2006, at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and was transfered to Broadway a year later with minor alterations.
